Second time for Sherlock Holmes 2009 movie. Lesse, what did I miss the first time...
The Good:
- I liked the look of London better this time. The uniform grey colour, yes, it was well-done. Still a bit too CGI-computer gamey sometimes, but oh well
- Watson ^_^ Liked him even more this time...
- The fight scenes felt, well, still a bit too many (more detecting, less repeated slow motion battle plz) but not as obnoxious. Especially the boxing ring scene rang much better the second time, since I mostly just went "WTF? WTF?" the first time I saw it
- Appreciated RDJ's acting much more
- Nice soundtrack! Though the same tunes are repeated a bit too often, I prefer when they very the leitmotif more - but still, it sounded good in almost all scenes. The explosion scene was a bit too heavy-handed, otherwise I think it all worked
- I wonder if it's less "Holmes accepts Watson's marriage", and perhaps really "Holmes wants Watson out of the way before he takes on Prof. Moriarty"? Interesting way to consider the end, that I missed the first time
The Bad:
- Swimming in the Thames = bad. Swimming in the Thames with your pipe and then putting that pipe in your mouth without a thorough cleaning = really bad.
- Masonic conspiracy. Ugh, such a tired plot.why not canonwhore and have it be a mormonic conspiracy, at least?
- RDJ still ain't my Holmes
- Whoa, Lord Blackwood is really a piece of wood, or possibly acted by one...
The Ugly:
- The American accent jarred even more. ETA: Also, somehow I didn't feel as if there was such a big difference in how characters of different class speaked, but maybe they overplay that in many period dramas?
- Holmes has grey eyes in canon! Why can't they ever just use contact lenses and fix these details, in any movie? Also, it would have made a wonderful way to subtly show that he was drugged, if you could've discerned his pupils well
- HORRIBLY MOVIE WEBSITE!. Menu, stop disappearing. Music, stop autoplaying!!
- Couldn't Holmes have played his violin properly, just once?
The Hmm:
- I wish they could have made more clear that Irene Adler habitually cross-dressed, although I guess it's good that she could wear trousers at least a little bit
- Why did they change Mary's past??? I just don't get it...
- The "is it supernatural or not" cases in the books tend to stay in the smaller realm - a family, a village, something like that (so far as I've read, still working on it). Somehow, I have the feeling that this does feel more authentic and less movie-ish, than when a grand Take Over The World plot is mixed with the is-there/is-there-not magic question.
- If they don't reveal Blackwood's father, how come he's a lord? Did the Lady Blackwood take part of these rituals and then, how do they know he's from just that ritual moment (she didn't sleep much with Lord Blackwood Sr?) Or is it just a taken name/title?
