dancing_moon: [APH] Austria getting his hair teased (Stress)

My RL = stress, so let's talk books instead.

I finally received and read Agatha H and the Airship City by Phil and Kaja Foglio. It was a funny, witty read but went by very quickly; had I not already been a devoted fan of Girl Genius, I would have been deply dissapointed. This is btw the novelisation of the comic, which can be read in its entity online - for free!

It is a very pretty book, though, and for that reason alone I'm kinda happy to own it in hardcover. It's also fun to see a swashbuckling, silly tale about a mad scientist who just happens to be a girl; and I like the female characters in GG, the whole bunch of them ^_^ Now there's added depths to several minor characters (though some of the coolest girls don't appear until later) and many nice background details for old fans like me. It does work better as a comic book, I'd say, because the quirky gaslamp fantasy and World Ruled by Mad Science is just so visual - but it's a funny book. Those interested in steampunk or funny adventure romps, I'd recommend waiting for the trade paperback this autumn and to buy it.

A workmate was moving and sold off some old manga for 5 SEK a piece. This isn't even a dollar, so I completed my collection of Urusei Yatsura / The Return of Lum, Rumiko Takahashi's first big hit.

It's massively entertaining, everyone is absolutely awful and it's great chaotic screwball comedy =D It's also almost eerie to see how these weird, agressive alien girls have somehow today morphed into the tsundere arhcetype... because trust me? With Ran-chan and Sakura and the others, there really is no dere-dere towards Ataru underneath.

I'm glad I own it, it's an important work and it's also great crack reading =D

I've also been on a One Piece binge, which may just deserve a post of it's own... But, all right, I admit it. Tediously long fights and 55+ books aside, that's a damn fine series. [personal profile] lanjelin was entirely right, it doesn't get really good until book 18 (which explains my earlier apathy, as I'd only read some 8 manga or so) but when the story kicks in, it hints of much more depth and political thought than any other long-running shonen I've seen. Well, with the exception of Galaxy Express 999, but that's a bit of a different kind of story overall

Have I talked about Black Butler volume four? Yes, no? Anyway, it's a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I don't know why, but I like it so much better when I re-read this story as an actual print book compared to the scans and I bloody loved the scans already! Ohhhh, it's getting goood now ^^
