Always nice to see another person interested in Saiunkoku. BTW, there is a Saiunkoku comm on DW (which is right now fairly low traffic, but we totally welcome new posts).

Anyway, the first season of the anime is very close in general to the novels in terms of plot, so I don't think you would miss much if you were to watch the anime as well as reading the manga (the manga IIRC is slightly more faithful to the novels).
